Perry was born in Chicago to actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. Her first television roles were two appearances on the show as Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) in her role on the ABC sitcom Roseanne which was played by her mother. Parents, however, would not let her perform until she turned an adult, fearing the effects of stress. Perry admitted she was shy to act when she was in high school. However, she started doing shows at Northwestern University as a way to build relationships after her transfer from Boston University. Perry was able to begin her acting career at New York after graduation, performing in minor roles on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. However, her home-sickness forced Perry come back to California to work as a stage actress. Her mother and she appeared on Broadway as a couple for the play The Other Place, in 2013. In 2015, she performed with her father and Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Anna Christie on the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry played a role in 9 episodes of The Family, an ABC crime thriller The Family in 2016. Perry played a prominent role in the ABC Drama about politics Scandal which starred her father. Also, she was cast on the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory spin-off Young Sheldon as a version younger of Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mother. It was her first role despite her close familial connection to the character.
